Review: ‘Luck’ fails to change Imran’s falling fate at the Box Office

‘Luck’ has proved unlucky for Imran Khan. Even with a star-studded cast that has some grueling action sequences, ‘Luck’ has failed to change Imran Khan’s fate at the Box Office. ‘Luck’ has proved unlucky for Imran Khan. Even with a star-studded cast that has some grueling action sequences, ‘Luck’ has failed to change Imran Khan’s fate at the Box Office. After a disastrous run at the Box Office last year with ‘Kidnap’, his first release this year, ‘Luck’, too seems to have bombed, making it about time for the actor to give up on the action genre. For now it would be safe for Imran to stick to his lover boy roles than bank flop after flops. For a film that had a smart plot and is based on the current frenzy holding the nation ‘reality TV’, ‘Luck’ could have been a captivating action thriller. Instead, it has ended up being an unintended comedy owing to its drab acts, predictable story line and shabby screenplay. Forty years ago, the film would have been a super-hit but in today’s age when actors have so many hullabaloos surrounding them ‘Luck’ is a sure shot disappointment. To begin with, the screenplay is sloppy that makes a mockery of not only the cast but also the fans who chose to watch the film. As per the storyline, the film smartly revolves around the idea of reality shows wherein men are pitted against each other to perform prize-winning challenges. Being a film, the stakes here are raised as opposed to reality shows. Instead of audiences voting, there are super rich men betting on contestants who are to compete against one another in life threatening circumstances. Talking about the plot, a major portion of the first half is dedicated to the introduction of several characters. There is Ram Mehra (played by Imran Khan) who has to repay the 20 crores that his late father had lost in stock market. Retired Major Jawar Pratap Singh (played by Mithun Chakravarthy), who is in urgent need of money for his ailing wife. Then there is a rapist Raghav (Ravi Kishen) who, after a loose noose fails to hang him, is set free by the law. And controlling them all is Musa, no prizes for guessing that a character by this name can only be played by Sanjay Dutt, who is shown as the ultimate villain with a sadist sense of entertainment. As for Shruti Haasan, she does make a stunning entry but, is sidelined by her loosely shaped character and drab of an act. One after the other the contestants who are vying for the humongous amount of prize money are eliminated while doing some intended to be risky, but comical tasks leaving our hero Imran Khan surviving over the villain Ravi Kishan. As far as performances are concerned, Imran does do a good act but the overall film and his overt lip movements give him away. Sanjay Dutt’s character here is much like Akshay’s part in Fear Factor, but given Sanju’s bulky frame, he is unable to pull off any stunts like Akki. The rest, like Mithun Chakravarthy and Ravi Kishen, end up playing comical characters through their poor intense acts. Overall, the film is a low shot to bring audiences to theaters. And the only ones who are lucky are those who do ignore ‘Luck’ Rating: 2 overrated cheers for this one!
