Panel on Internal Trade Reforms to be set up this month: Thomas

Kochi: A high-powered committee on Internal Trade Reforms, will be constituted by this month-end in the wake of the government's decision allowing foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail, Minister of State for Consumer Affairs K V Thomas said on Friday.

"We are in the process of forming the committee which will look into all issues of internal trade which will be impacted by FDI," he told reporters after the 27th Central Consumer Protection Council meeting here.

"We have to think of Inter department coordination to remove hurdles, logistics issues, transportation issues, setting of cold chains, etc," Thomas, who would be the committee Chairman, said, adding that the number of members in the committee was yet to be decided.

Consumer Affairs Secretary Pankaj Aggarwala said members from other ministries, who have have some say in internal trade, transport, finance, revenue and environment would also be part of the committee.

The decision to form the committee was taken in October end.

Helplines and Consumer clubs would be formed in all states for which financial assistance would be provided, Thomas said.

Replying to a query, he said that the new packaging regime had come into effect from November 1 for 19 items.

The Consumer Protection Council meeting was attended by state and central government officials and representatives of various consumer organisations.
