South Africa wants to replicate Amul model

Pretoria: As Prime Minister Manmohan Singh went about his engagements at the 5th India-Brazil-South Africa Summit in this beautiful administrative capital, host officials here said they were truly taken in by the success of Amul and wanted to replicate the model.

South African Ambassador to India Sithembile Majeke, they said, had already visited Anand in Gujarat for a firsthand look at the cooperative dairy movement and was impressed how it had transformed into a $3 billion conglomerate today, owned by 2.6 million farmers.

South Africa, which is facing a tough time with its farm sector, was advised by the World Bank to look at what is officially called Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation as a model, rather than the western countries, given the small individual size of their cattle stock.
