New Delhi: Trade unions Tuesday described as an "unprecedented success" the day-long nation-wide general strike called by them to protest "anti-labour" policies of the government even as it evoked mixed response in the states.

"It was unprecedented...the biggest-ever strike and should serve as a wake-up call to the government," AITUC general secetary Gurudas Dasgupta said.

A joint statement issued by the unions also congratulated the working people of the country for their "overwhelming and magnificent response to the united call" by them to protest price rise, alleged anti-labour policies of the government and disinvestment of PSUs.

They claimed over 10 crore workers both from organized and unorganised joined the strike across the country, affecting almost all the sectors including banking and transport sectors.

The 11 major central trade unions are demanding universal social security cover for unorganized sector workers, amendment of Minimum Wages Act to ensure universal coverage and fixation of statutory minimum wage at not less than Rs 10,000 per month and assured pension for all among others.

Congress-affiliated INTUC, Shiv Sena-backed Bharatiya Kamgar Sena and UPA ally Indian Union Muslim League's trade-wing STU also supported the strike along with some 5000 small unions.

The strike is a warning to the government that workers would not accept any "neglect" and would carry forward the "struggle to a higher pitch if their basic demands are not addressed through concrete remedial action", said CITU general secretary Tapan Sen.
