Kolkata: The unrest in Libya and Syria has more than doubled the fertiliser subsidy bill from Rs 40,000 crore to Rs 90,000 crore, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said Sunday.
"The crisis in Libya and Syria has a direct impact on the fertiliser subsidy bill from Rs 40k crore to Rs 90k crore as the country has to import phosphatic and potassium fertilisers," Mukherjee said at a seminar organised by Assocham here.
"We simply cannot ignore the fact that what is happening in Libya is not merely the concern of people of that country. I am directly impacted because these fertilisers are not produced in India. We have to import these totally," he said.
