The S&P BSE benchmark Sensex pared its early gains and dropped by 252 points Thursday on fresh selling, mainly in realty, capital goods and power sectors.
The Sensex resumed higher at 21,179.91 and dropped further by 252 points to 20,888.33.
The NSE 50-share Nifty also nosedived by 80.50 points to 6,221.
Major losers on BSE were Bharti Airtel (2.68 percent), Tata Power (2.60 percent), L&T (2.52 percent), BHEL (2.34 percent) and Coal India (2.18 percent).
Today's fall is the second consecutive daily loss for the Sensex in 2014, after gaining 9 percent last year.
Meanwhile, European stocks inched up in the first session of 2014, hitting fresh peaks following a stellar 2013.
Asian stocks edged lower today after gauges of manufacturing in China declined. Key benchmark indices in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea were off 0.12 percent to 1.42 percent while Singapore's Strait Times was quoted higher by 0.17 percent.
Japanese stock markets remained closed for a holiday.
