Review: Rishi-Neetu starrer ‘Do Dooni Chaar’ is a light-hearted comedy

‘Do Dooni Chaar’ is an amusing take on the life and times of an honest and simple mathematics teacher and his family’s aspirations of achieving a better standard of living.

Habib Faisal’s ‘Do Dooni Chaar’ revives the 70’s hit pair of Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh almost after thirty years as affable Mr Santosh Duggal and lovable Mrs Kusum Duggal. Also starring Archit Krishna as Deepu and Aditi Vasudev as Payal, ‘Do Dooni Chaar’ is an amusing take on the life and times of an honest and simple mathematics teacher and his family’s aspirations of achieving a better standard of living. If our mathematics teacher Mr Santosh is trying hard to make the ends meet by teaching in a school and slogging in private coaching classes, Kusum is the perfect housewife who looks after the home and the hearth while kids Payal and Deepu dream of an opulent lifestyle. A typical middle class Delhiite, Santosh and family live a tight-budgeted life as he commutes on his most prized possession ‘Duggal Express’ – a noisy and rickety scooter. However, fed up of taunting neighbours and a sister married off in a wealthy family, the Duggals decide to buy a car. However, the decision to buy a car turns out to be nightmarish when the Duggals buy umpteen packs of detergent in the hope of winning a car as a lucky prize. Further, car loans, down payment and EMI become a gordian knot for the entire family. As the story progresses, a series of events put the honesty of a teacher and parent to test and as expected, our good-hearted Santosh chooses the right decision and emerges morally upright and victorious. Indeed, ‘Do Dooni Chaar’ is a feel good movie that will surely leave a smile on your face. The story of the film is based on the life of an ordinary middle class man as he fights with the demons of consumerism, corruption and duplicity that have crept in our lives. Through ‘Do Dooni Chaar’, Faisal delineates a poignant and realistic portrayal of a Delhi based middle-class family, whose characters are easy to identify with. The middle class teaching community will simply fall in love with the spirited tale of the working class hero. A word on acting, Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh are a treat to watch. Rishi surprises with his amazing comic timing and Neetu looks every bit gorgeous in her new avatar. Kids Krishna and Vasudev share great chemistry as siblings. The music connects with the film and is enjoyable, especially ‘Maange ki ghodi’. Even though the film is based on middle class morality and the dignity of teaching profession, ‘Do Dooni Chaar’ is not didactic in nature. Enjoy this light-hearted comedy with your family. Ratings: Three cheers for this one!
