Maharani Gayatri Devi breathes her last in Jaipur

Considered among the most beautiful women of the world, former royal Maharani Gayatri Devi died after prolonged illness at the Santokba Durlabhji Memorial Hospital (SDMH) here on Wednesday. The 90-year-old was admitted to the hospital last week after she complained of stomach ache. Rajmata of Jaipur was born on May 23, 1919 and she belonged to the royalty of ‘Cooch Behar’.

Jaipur: Considered among the most beautiful women of the world, former royal Maharani Gayatri Devi died after prolonged illness at the Santokba Durlabhji Memorial Hospital (SDMH) here on Wednesday.The 90-year-old was admitted to the hospital last week after she complained of stomach ache. "She developed gastric problems in London and was admitted to a hospital there. She expressed her desire to return and was flown in an air ambulance to Jaipur. She was in SDMH since then," an administrative officer of SDMH said. She was born on May 23, 1919 and belonged to the royalty of ‘Cooch Behar’. She became the third Maharani of Jaipur through marriage to Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II of Jaipur and was titled the ‘Rajmata’. She also played an extremely successful innings as a politician. Gayatri Devi was celebrated for her delicate beauty and had become a fashion icon in her adulthood. Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan had recently expressed his concern for the erstwhile royal’s health and had also wished her a speedy recovery. "The day ends with some concern for Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur. She is quite unwell and has been admitted to hospital. One of the most beautiful women in the world, a friend, a gentle and generous host to me on several of my trips to her beautiful palaces, now caught up with age. My prayers for a speedy recovery," he had written on his blog. Only a day ago, renowned actress Leela Naidu had passed away. Both were named by 'Vogue' among the 10 most beautiful women in the world.
