London: George Entwistle, who joined the BBC in 1989 as a broadcast trainee, has been appointed the next Director-General of the corporation, succeeding Mark Thompson, it was announced Wednesday.

Lord Chris Patten, chairman of the BBC Trust, said Entwistle's "experience of making and delivering great programmes that audiences love - built up through many years of working for the corporation - will prove invaluable as he and his team work to ensure the BBC remains the greatest broadcaster in the world".

Entwistle's annual salary in the new job will be 450,000 pounds as part of the BBC's cost-cutting exercise. Thompson’s annual salary was 671,000 pounds.

Entwistle is currently director of BBC Vision.
