Washington: The managing director of the International Monetary Fund says her global lending organisation wants the eurozone to stay together, not be broken up by the departure of some of its weaker nations.

Christine Lagarde told the annual meeting of The Associated Press that the IMF has no agenda "to break up that zone."

There has been talk that Greece, one of the 17 nations that use the euro, might at some point leave. Lagarde was asked if such countries, even Spain and Italy, might be better off outside the zone.

"To your question, I think the answer is no," she said.
