‘NOW’ pays £100,000 phone-hacking compensation to Sienna Miller

London: Actress Sienna Miller, who was seeking a 400,000 pound settlement from British tabloid ‘News of the World’ for hacking her phone calls, has settled for a 100,000 pounds payout after receiving legal advice.

The actress agreed to the settlement midway through a High Court battle after the newspaper agreed to tell her the full extent of its interception of her mobile phone voicemail messages. It is believed she was advised that the court was unlikely to award her a higher sum – and would have looked on her unfavourably, in terms of costs, if she had continued with her claim. Miller is the first of a string of celebrities seeking compensation from the Sunday newspaper’s owner News Group Newspapers, to agree to a settlement. Miss Miller’s lawyers said that there had been a full admission of liability and she had been fully vindicated. “Miss Miller is proceeding in this way precisely because all her claims have been admitted. Her primary concern is not how much money is rewarded by way of compensation but what the extent was of the hacking that took place,” a website quoted her barrister, Hugh Tomlinson, QC, as saying. ANI
