London: The three top European Union leaders will hold a special meeting in Brussels the day after Britain`s referendum on membership in the bloc, the European Commission confirmed on Friday.

EU President Donald Tusk, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Parliament chief Martin Schulz will meet June 24, a Commission spokesman said.

The spokesman said Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, whose country currently holds the six-month rotating presidency of the 28-nation EU, will also take part.

Britain votes on June 23 whether to remain in the EU or leave, with recent polls showing a swing in favour of the "Brexit" camp setting off alarm bells in European capitals.

The outcome of the vote will dominate a summit of member state leaders on June 28-29.
