US adds 175,000 jobs in May, unemployment at 7.6%

Washington: The US economy added a modest 175,000 jobs in May, the Labor Department announced Friday, scotching worries that job creation had slumped in the spring.

The unemployment rate pushed up a bare 0.1 percentage points to 7.6 percent.

The number of Americans officially jobless was essentially unchanged at 11.8 million, but the number of long-term unemployed, those who have been looking for jobs for 27 weeks or longer, rose slightly to 4.36 million.

At the same time, the number of those who have dropped out of the labour force fell by 231,000, and the number of Americans working part-time because they have to fell by 12,000. Both are signs of some strength in the labour market.

Hours worked and hourly wages barely ticked higher, suggesting only a slight increase in household incomes.
