New Delhi: `Naughty @ 40` is set to be a vintage Govinda fare complete with the mannerisms, body language and dialogues that made the actor a superstar in the 90s, says director Jagmohan Mundhra.
The actor plays a 40-year-old virgin in the upcoming comedy and plans to bring his old charm back.
"The idea was to recreate a similar magic which one expects from him in each of his films. I told my producers that perhaps we could have the tag of `Vintage Govinda is back` in the promos as well," Mundhra told reporters.
"He may have hit a bad patch for a while but he is someone who really knows the pulse of the audience," Mundhra added.
With David Dhawan, Govinda went on to make hits like `Hero No 1`, `Coolie No 1`, `Bade Miyan Chote Miyan`,`Aankhen, `Raja Babu` and `Shola Aur Shabnam` in the 90s. They last collaborated on `Partner`, which was again a hit.
But for Mundhra, who has made films like `Provoked`, `Shoot On Sight`, `Bawandar` and `Kamla`, it was quite a shift.
"When Govinda approached me to make this film, I was very apprehensive and told him that I had never directed such a comedy. Also, personally I have a different sense of humour. I was worried if I would be able to do justice to the film," said Mundhra.
"Govinda said that he wasn`t worried because with this film, he wanted me to reach out to the kind of masses that I had never explored before. Also, he admitted that with my name being attached to the film, even he would be able to find a new audience base for himself," he added.
Mundhra called his friend Anupam Kher and discussed the film with him before saying yes.
"I told Anupam that `Naughty @ 40` seemed to be the kind of film that David Dhawan and Anees Bazmee make. These are big directors and I respect them for what they are. After all they know how to reach out to masses. But I couldn`t think of making a film like them."
But Kher assured him that the film will be a new experience for the director, who decided to bring the old Govinda back in a new style.
"He has an uncanny sense of what the masses want so why not go with his conviction. I decided to follow his vision while bringing my own stamp."
Starring Yuvika Chaudhary, Sayali Bhagat and Edward Lucia along with Anupam Kher, Shakti Kapoor and Sanjay Mishra, `Naughty @ 40` releases all over on April 29.
