New Delhi: The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will reveal the list of applications for the first round of new generic top level domains (gTLDs) at a press conference in London, according to media reports.
ICANN which is responsible for maintaining the internet's domain name system thus will break the .com address pattern.
The new domain names, which may be generic, could be anything viz .auto or .bank, or brand specific — .Tata.
Henceforth internet's namespace might expand radically.
ICANN has received more than 1900 applications for new TLDs.
ICANN in a press and news announcement on June 06 stated, “Given the large number of new gTLD applications, we will divide and evaluate them in batches. The batching system is targeted to open at 00:01 UTC on 8 June 2012, and will close at 23:59 UTC on 28 June 2012. The target date for posting the batching order is 11 July 2012.”
