Shillong: Over 11,000 class XII students in Meghalaya were on Wednesday given a tablet computer each as part of the state government’s Digital Learning Aid for Students scheme which is set to cover about 25,000 students.

Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, who distributed the tablets to students at the launch of the ambitious IT scheme said the tablet distributed free of cost to the students is a means through which the state government aims to empower them in the changing world.

"Use them effectively and ensure that what is given to you it will produce results," Mukul said while addressing thousand of eager school children hailing from East Khasi Hills district in the capital.

"With globalization, we cannot live in isolation and we are not isolated from what is happening around the world and this is our beginning and we have to keep pace with it," the chief minister said.

He also announced as part of the scheme, each of the teachers of over 950 higher secondary schools will be provided with the Digital Learning Aid for Teachers.

The chief minister has also announced that the state government would provide all higher secondary schools with high speed Wi-Fi broadband internet connections.

Meghalaya literacy rate is just above the national rate with 75.5 percent.
