‘Jab We Met’ now has a foreign copy ‘Leap Year’

It has finally happened as the tables have now turned and Bollywood filmmakers have something to cheer about. Mumbai: It has finally happened as the tables have now turned and Bollywood filmmakers have something to cheer about. For decades, filmdom has been unabashedly copying western scripts, churning one foreign copy after the other but now it’s Hollywood that is doing the copycat act. And it’s the 2007 hit ‘Jab We Met’ that has inspired a copy in the West. The Kareena-Shahid starrer has inspired Universal films ‘Leap Year’. Directed by Anand Tucker, the film that stars Amy Adams, Matthew Goode and Adam Scott is an out an out copy of our desi film. And this is no loose speculation as the ‘Leap Year’ synopsis on the Universal Film News homepage clearly states: `The film is loosely based on Jab We Met, a 2007 Bollywood film.` As per sources, Tucker had become an immediate fan of ‘Jab We Met’ and had decided to make a foreign copy of the film set in Ireland. But director Imtiaz Ali has no clue about this development. Talking to a news daily, the talented taskmaster said, "I have not heard of it. But I am happy about it. I am not complaining. It is a good sign. I am glad that ‘Jab We Met’ is serving as an inspiration to others -- that too in the West. I would love to watch ‘Leap Year’. Well, with the West often suing our filmmakers over copyright violations, we wonder what the makers of ‘Jab We Met’ have in store for their Hollywood counterparts.
