New Delhi: Hollywood flick ‘Bruno’, which released in India this Friday, has been in news for right as well as some wrong reasons. It is a mockumentary comedy film directed by Larry Charles and produced by Sacha Baron Cohen, who has also acted in the film. Lauded by many for its humour, blasted by others for being crass, ‘Bruno’ has opened to mixed reactions in India.
Sacha Baron Cohen has proved his mettle as the flamboyant gay Austrian fashion journalist Bruno. This film is the third, based on characters from Da Ali G Show, following Ali G Indahouse and Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.
The film begins with Bruno making a disastrous spectacle of himself at a designer`s show during Milan Fashion Week. After being fired, he abruptly decides to go to Los Angeles, accompanied by his lovelorn assistant, Lutz (Gustaf Hammarsten), to become a celebrity.
Bruno wants to excel and he can go to any extent to be famous. So, he tries to solve the Middle East`s woes by dressing as a gay Orthodox Jew in Jerusalem; he adopts an African baby and tells the TV audience that the correct term for his child is "African-American"; he starts a TV show in which his urethra pouts his name but he soon realizes that he has no chances to excel because he is a gay. So, he tries to be hetrosexual.
Bruno`s hoaxes and gags which take on celebrities are hilarious and make some prejudiced idiots look thoroughly silly. His stint operation scenes against a politician are one sequence to watch out for.
Sacha Baron Cohen`s ambushes are at times unconvincing and crass. And his gay act needs improvement too. Technologically, the film is solid. The film is worth a watch, but definitely not with your family.
