Cos discusses coal production for power plants New Delhi: With power plants facing acute fuel shortage, a Committee of Secretaries on Monday discussed impediments to raising domestic coal production and providing fuel linkage to electricity generation units.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, after meeting heads of leading power companies on January 18, constituted the Committee of Secretaries (CoS) to review various issues facing the power sector periodically.

Issues related to coal -- production, linkage, import etc, which were listed by the private power companies in their first meeting (January 18) were discussed at the CoS meeting at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), sources said without elaborating on the outcome of today's meeting.

However, CoS meeting on Tuesday may take up the issue of providing natural gas to power plants.

Delay in environment and forest clearances, funding problems, worsening health of power distribution companies and a proposal to levy duty on imported power equipment would also be taken up in the upcoming meetings of the CoS.

A Committee of Secretaries -- headed by Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Pulok Chatterji and secretaries from the Ministries of Power, Petroleum, Coal,
Environment and Finance -- was set up to look into the problems faced by the sector.
