Delhi govt clears projects worth Rs 1,136 crore New Delhi: Delhi Government Friday cleared a number of projects totalling Rs 1,136 crore which included building of over 7,500 rooms for providing temporarary accomodation to construction labourers.

The projects, to be implemented under Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewable Mission, were approved at a meeting of State Level Steering Committee on JNNURM presided by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

The Chief Minister said Rs 906 crore will be spent on construction of 7,672 rooms having dormiory facilities for stay of labourers involved in major infrastructure and building projects.

The Committee also approved a housing project under which 3,600 dwelling units will be built in Kanjhawala for economically weaker section, at an estimated cost of Rs 229.83 crore.

Officials said government decided to provide accomodation to workers, who come from all over the country, as there is shortage of affordable accommodation near the construction sites which has been forcing them to put up in slums.

The dormitories will be given to firms and contractors on rental basis for stay of migrant workers.

Officials said a total of 3052 rooms will be constructed at Kanjhawala under two separate projects while and another 4620 rooms will be built in Samaspur area.

They said vocational and skill development training will be imparted to the labourers during their stay in the dormitories.

The project to construct 3,600 dwelling units will be implemented by Delhi Government's premier infrastructure development agency DSIIDC while tenders will be floated for construction of dormitory rooms.

The Committee also gave ex-post facto approval to DMRC for purchase of 228 non air conditioned mini feeder buses. Earlier, approval was given for purchase of air conditioned mini feeder buses.

The 228 mini buses would be deployed to provide an effective transport link for passengers between metro stations to and fro nearby colonies.

The meeting was attended by all Delhi Government ministers, Mayor of South Delhi MCD and a number of MLAs.
