Apple on Tuesday launched its much anticipated smaller, cheaper iPad, the Apple iPad Mini at an event in California Theatre in San Jose, California. Apple also launched the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro, new desktop Macs, iBooks 3.0 and iTunes 11 during the event.

However, the main importance was laid on the 7.9 inch iPad Mini which has been the centre of speculations around the gadget world. It has been finally unveiled and is priced at USD 329 for the 16 GB, USD 429 for a 32 GB and USD 529 for a 64 GB.

Some of the salient features are:

Display: 7.9" 1024x768 display

Weight: 308 grams

Thickness: 7.2 mm

Colours: Black and White

Camera: Rear and Front

Battery: 10 hours

The iPad Mini is LTE capable and has a Lightning connector

Unveiling the iPad Mini, Phil Schiller, vice president of marketing, joked with the crowd and said, "You knew there'd be something called Mini in this presentation," revealing that Apple has sold 84 million iPads since their debut in April 2010

Joining in, Apple CEO Tim Cook said, "So this iPad mini is just 7.2 mm thick. That's about a quarter thinner than the fourth-generation iPad. Thinner than a pencil."

"You can hold it in one hand," he said adding, “It's not just a shrunken down iPad. It's an entirely new design."

Apple faces tough competition from Google and Amazon in the world of tab and the tech giant believes that the iPad Mini will be able to turn the fortune in their favour.
