Eminent vocalist Reba Muhuri dies

Eminent classical vocalist Reba Muhuri died of cardiac arrest.

Kolkata: Eminent classical vocalist Reba Muhuri died of cardiac arrest at Army Command Hospital here.
She was 81 and is survived by three sons. Muhuri was admitted to a private hospital on February 27 with breathing problem and later shifted to Army Command Hospital where she died on Sunday, family sources said. She was cremated today. Her talent was tapped by eminent film maker Satyajit Ray in his films - `Satranj Ke khilari` (1977) and Joi Baba Felunath (1979). She also lent her voice in Purnendu Patri`s Bengali film `Kalighat Pat`. Born at Krishnagar of Nadia district in 1930, Muhuri was initiated to music by her musicologist father Amiyanath Sanyal. Despite her marriage with an Army officer at the age of 16, Muhuri continued her music pursuit and was mainly trained by Bade Moti Bai in Benaras. Muhuri performed in several parts of the country and abroad. Her autobiography `Thumri-o-Baiji` published in 1980s is still a bestsellers among the music lovers. PTI
