India vs Australia, 1st Test, Day 1 — As it happened...

Virat Kohli-led India have been in superb form in Tests lately and it remains to be seen whether Steve Smith and his men can end their 19-man unbeaten streak in the five-day format.

India vs Australia, 1st Test, Day 1 — As it happened...

Pune: Live cricket score and live updates from Day 1 of the first Test match between India and Mumbai being played at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium. David Warner and Matthew Renshaw provided a good start to the Aussies with an 82-run stand for opening wicket.

END OF DAY'S PLAY: Fantastic turn of game. What would be in India's favour, did indeed turn, but after a long-standing 82-run opening partnership. Umesh drew first blood in a spinner's pitch, sending the danger man Warner. Post lunch session saw a complete capitalisation of Aussie batting as one by one they toppled down to India's spin attack. After tea, things looked bit awry for the visitors, until the cameo role by Starc, who is still at crease. A quick half-century by the pacer added to the frustration of the home side as they had aimed for a complete bundling up of the Australians. Day 2 is where we will look at, at target does Starc lead his side to? And what will be in India's stock? Will Kohli and company dominate on the second day or will the Kangaroos hop in to stop their party?

TEA BREAK: India went in to drive the game in their favour. But the spin friendly pitch seemed to provide little hope to the Indians as the openers dominated through much of the first session, until Umesh got the better of Warner. In the second session, it was all in India's favour. Smith and Handscomb tried giving some momentum to the Aussie innings but fell in quick succession, dismantling their hope to go through strong down the day's play. Will Aussie succumb to India's spin attack or can Renshaw build up a miraculous show?

09: 05 am - TOSS: Steve Smith won the toss and decided to bat first. The wicket looks dry and there are too many cracks on the wicket. Experts believe the match won't last for more than three days.

08: 42 am - The challenge for Australia would be to decode Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja – two bowlers who have dismantled the batsmen who have toured India in the last 12 months. It also remains to be seen whether Australia have come up with a plan to stop Kohli's incredible form.

India are the top-ranked Test side and are unbeaten in their last 19 matches. But they face first real challenge under new captain Virat Kohli when the Aussies pay them a visit.

The four-match series will start tomorrow in Pune, and the side which draw first blood will be almost difficult to stop. Both the camps know this fact, and stakes are never this high.
