New Delhi: India is yet to realised it's sporting potentials, but the country has had moments of glory. It's almost impossible though to choose the greatest of them all. But one stood out for its timing, and of course it's collective impact on the nation.

Besides it's great hockey teams, and fabled stories of wrestling giants, India never had a world conquering moment even after independence from the British.

But in 1983, a young captain led a talented bunch of players break age-old shackles and become world champions for the first time.

It was the spark that a country in transition needed, to fulfill its potential, in every aspect of life.
