Zaheer Khan won't be India's next bowling coach as his 'services' are too expensive for BCCI

New Delhi: Ever since he retired from international cricket, the well known faces of Indian cricket have backed Zaheer Khan to be India's next fast bowling coach. Considering his fantastic record, it was a matter of time that Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) struck a deal with the Mumbaikar.

However, according to a report in The Times of India, the BCCI did approach him for his services as the bowling coach, but it couldn't materialise. The Mumbai speedster's financial terms and conditions proved to be the turning point.

The report added that Zaheer wasn't keen on joining the job full-time and had asked for Rs 4 crore for 100 days' service in a year – which wasn't feasible for the Indian board.

"The process to involve Zaheer was to have his services over a long period. It was turning out to be an expensive deal, and BCCI lost interest in hiring him. Zaheer also has a few things lined up and he can't be a full-time coach right now," a source close to the development told TOI.

It has been reported that ever since Anil Kumble became the coach of the Indian team, he has been throwing his weight behind Zaheer to be India's fast bowling coach.

Earlier this year, Zaheer was appointed as the coach of the Delhi Daredevils franchise in the Indian Premier League.

The speedster played 92 Test matches for his country during a successful career, taking 311 wickets at 32.94 runs apiece.

The 37-year-old was also a mainstay in the One-Day International side. Making his debut in 2000, Zaheer took 282 wickets in 200 ODIs at an average of 29.34.

With a long home season ahead, India wanted someone like Zaheer to hone the skills of Indian pacers before the team starts travelling abroad.
