New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Tajinder Bagga on Tuesday distributed firecrackers among slum kids in Hari Nagar area in Delhi.

The Delhi unit BJP spokesperson posted a video on his Twitter account distributing firecrackers to the children.

He had announced on October 9 that he would purchase firecrackers worth Rs 50,000 and distribute them among children.

The BJP leader had claimed that the act would not violate the Supreme Court order banning the sale of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR this Diwali.

“I have a plan to buy firecrackers worth Rs 50,000 and give them to the children living in the slums of Hari Nagar, so that they can celebrate Diwali. It will not be a violation or defamation of the Supreme Court order, because the court has only banned the sale of firecrackers. It has not put a ban on buying or bursting them,” Bagga had said.

The Supreme Court in its October 9 order had sought a complete ban on sale of firecrackers in the National Capital Region (NCR) ahead of the upcoming festival of Diwali.

While referring to the air pollution levels in Delhi-NCR during and immediately after 2016 Diwali , the apex court had observed that due to the adverse effects of burning of fire crackers, "the air quality deteriorates abysmally and alarmingly and the city chokes thereby".
