Carla Bruni accessed secret docs on affair rumours

London: In a startling revelation, Carla Bruni, the wife of French President Nicholas Sarkozy reportedly accessed secret documents to discover who was behind the rumours that she and her husband were having affairs, authors of the book ‘Carla and the Ambitions’ claim. As per the report published in the guardian, the authors say that Carla used classified information of phone calls and text messages to expose plotters who were supposedly trying to oust her; including the former French justice minister Rachida Dati. With such allegations levied on Carla, President Sarkozy is facing an embarrassing investigation into reports that the Elysée Palace ordered counter-espionage services to spy on Le Monde scribes to identify the source of leaks in the scandal surrounding the L`Oréal heiress Liliane Bettencourt. Rumors had it that that both he and his wife were having affairs. It is believed that at that time the couple had called on security services to find out the person behind the rumours, no solid evidence was found. Of late, scribes Michaël Darmon and Yves Derai say the Elysée received a full police report stating that there was a plot by Dati. The authors say that agents identified the plotters through telephone calls and text messages and also suggested that the culprits tried to involve others. Believing Carla to be Sarkozy’s "weak link", the plotters allegedly tried to persuade Sarkozy`s former wife, Cécilia Attias to return to his side. Le Parisien newspaper said that as soon as Carla had the report in her hands, she called her predecessor, who now lives in NY, informing her: "Two people with whom you are in contact are behaving in an unacceptable manner towards us … I am not talking about suspicious or malicious gossip. I have a police report that you are welcome to see. I know you have nothing to do with them but I suggest you keep your distance." Darmon and Derai state that police examined the phone records of numerous well-known "personalities" suspected of being involved in spreading the rumours. In April, Dati issued the following statement in which she "protested with indignation against allegations in certain press organs that she was responsible in any way for the propagation of absurd and inadmissible rumours about the private life of the presidential couple." According to Dati, she was dumped from the government and would "stop at nothing to return to such dizzying heights". Dati and a second alleged plotter, Sophie Douzal, the ex-wife of the president`s brother François Sarkozy, are nicknamed as "Stiletto Heel Firm" in the book. After implicating the two women, Carla rang Douzal, who calls herself Sophie Sarkozy, to rebuke her and tell her that she does not have the right to use the president`s family name. ‘Carla and the Ambitions’ is the second biography of Bruni-Sarkozy to appear in a week. Earlier, ‘Carla – A Secret Life’ was a critical portrayal of her as a Marie-Antoinette figure, who was more concerned with ex-flames and cosmetic surgery than representing her nation on the world stage. The scribes’ book was written with the consent and cooperation of Bruni-Sarkozy. The claim that the Bruni-Sarkozy used the secret services comes at time when Sarkozy is facing international and domestic censure.
