India can lead the world, says Dalai Lama

New Delhi: India, the land of Mahatma Gandhi, can lead the world on the path of non-violence, Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama said at a lecture here Saturday.

"The practice of compassion and non-violence is important and is the way and means to bringing conviction to people. India can lead the world on the path of non-violence," the Dalai Lama said at former president R. Venkataraman`s birth centenary lecture on non-violence and spiritualism.

Talking at length about the importance of compassion, the spiritul guru said: "Compassion is for your own wellbeing. Medicine alone cannot bring wellbeing. Now doctors are realising that peace of mind is important in ensuring good health."

"In fact, in building strong coalition among nations, friendship is important. For friendship, trust is important. And for trust you need compassion," he added.

On religion, the Dalai Lama said a lot of people who say they are religious do not actually understand the meaning of their faith.

"Sensible people do not necessarily follow any religion. In this country, I have seen that a lot of people begin their day by praying but a lot of them don`t know the meaning of the hymns. That is why they resort to corrupt means when they get a chance. Because they don`t see the connection between religion and the day-to-day life," he said.

"I think modern education should also have a curriculum on moral principles," he added.
