John Mayer shuts down Twitter account

Los Angeles: John Mayer has shut down his Twitter account despite amassing 3.7 million followers on the popular micro-blogging site.

A spokesman for the 32-year-old said that the musician took the decision to close down his page because his `Battle Studies` tour has now come to an end, MTV News reported.

Mayer, who released his latest album `Battle Studies` in November last year, has been an avid user of Twitter in the past year, posting regular accounts of his everyday life.

The `Gravity` singer caused controversy in February, after using what is considered to be a racist term during an interview for Playboy magazine.

Afterwards he took to Twitter to apologise to fans, saying, "`Re: using the `N word` in an interview: I am sorry that I used the word. And it`s such a shame that I did because the point I was trying to make was in the exact opposite spirit of the word itself. It was arrogant of me to think I could intellectualize using it, because I realize that there`s no intellectualizing a word that is so emotionally charged".
