Keep your jewellery sparkling through monsoon
Mumbai: Here`s how to keep your jewellery sparkling in the rains. If they`re pearls, clean them regularly and keep them in a separate box. If it`s silver, take it to a jeweller. And if they`re diamonds, just sit back - the girl`s best friend doesn`t need much care.
"Usually sturdy jewellery doesn`t need a lot of care, but a few things can be kept in mind to avoid any harm to your favourite pieces. You should never keep jewellery in a velvet box. Keep a nice plastic box, keep cotton and nothing will go wrong," suggests Tarun Jethanandani of Eekani Jewels.
"Jewellery is a luxury thing; you can`t wash your hands wearing it and if you know that you`re going to get wet in the rain, you should take it off before moving out, because the pieces can get damaged," added Jethanandani on the sidelines of the recently concluded India International Jewellery Week (IIJW) here.
Jethanandani maintained that metals like gold and platinum don`t require a lot of care, but silver jewellery can easily get affected.
"Silver has a tendency of turning black and in monsoon it is more prone to corrosion; so it needs attention. There are some alloys to stop the aging of the metal, and a good jeweller can always help the customer with that," he informed.
Sunil Datwani of Gehna Jewellers says jewellery lovers can relax as far as their diamonds are concerned, but pearls and coloured stones need extra care, and not just during monsoon.
"Diamond jewellery doesn`t get affected in any season because it is the hardest substance known to man. So people can still go a little easy on that as far as care is concerned. But one needs to be a bit careful with coloured stones and pearls. They tend to get tarnished during this season," he said.
"Pearl jewellery should be kept in a separate box and should not be mixed with other stones," he added.
Jewellery designer Rosily Paul also has a piece of advice. She said: "Pearls and corals have to be taken care of the most in this season. You cannot put them away in the locker and forget about them. You have to protect them from eroding chemicals. So you need to keep cleaning them always."
According to Devendra Dayal, art consultant in Sangam Jewellery, if people spend generously on purchasing jewellery, they should also go an extra mile to protect it.
"Jewellery should be taken care of at all times. It should be cleaned at regular intervals and then neatly kept in boxes," he specified.
