Mumbai: One of India’s most popular socialites and philanthropists - Parmeshwar Godrej - passed away Monday night at Breach Candy hospital. Reports suggest that she was suffering from a degenerative lung disease. News of Parmeshwar’s demise has left friends and celebrities in disbelief.

Wife of Adi Godrej (Chairman of Godrej Group), Parmeshwar had contributed immensely towards creating awareness about AIDS and combating the disease in India through the Heroes Project.

The noble initiative was launched by her in 2004 along with Hollywood actor Richard Gere. The initiate also got support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Clinton Global Initiative.

One of the first air hostesses of Air India, Parmeshwar was quite popular in the social circuit too. She had hosted American talkshow queen – Oprah Winfrey – during a bash she had at her villa in Mumbai in 2012. The same was attended by the who’s who of the film industry, elitists and industrialists.

Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, a very dear friend of Parmeshwar, took to Twitter to express shock and condolences.

He tweeted: “Devastated by death of close friend, Parmeshwar Godrej, last night: she was always there for me in my most difficult times. 1/2 (sic).” And added, “2/2 May her husband Adhi and her children find strength to cope with this loss (sic).”

Parmeshwar is survived by husband Adi and three children -- Nisaba, Pirojsha and Tanya Dubash.
