Mumbai: The Supreme Court on Monday ruled in favour of the female makeup artists, who had petitioned the court in January last year of not getting work in the film industry owing to the presence of a strong union.

The Supreme Court termed the employing preferences of the film industry, which employs only male makeup artists as, "unconstitutional, illegal and the worst kind of gender discrimination".

For over 6 decades, female makeup artists were denied work in the industry, as the union believed that the men would run short of work.

Though women worked as hair-stylists, women makeup artists found no jobs in the industry to make the most of their expertise.

The court has directed the India's Cine Costume Make-up Artists and Hair Dressers Association to lift the ban on female artists with immediate effect.

Since the doors of the film industry were closed for them, many female makeup artists had to resort to fashion shows and commercials to earn their living, reports suggest.
