Underage girls praised for resisting being married off

Kolkata: Three underage girls from Purulia district who were to be married off but refused to do so received appreciation from West Bengal Labour Minister Purnendu Ghosh today.

"We don`t want to get married at this age. We want to continue our education till we are mature enough," the girls from Lagda village in Purulia district Gayatri Rajwar (15), Bobby Rajwar (14) and Sangeeta Bauri (14) said after meeting the minister.

The three girls, students of class-V and VI of a school under National Child Labour Project (NCLP) in Purulia, was accompanied by Assistant Labour Commissioner in the district Prasenjit Kundu, who helped them to fight against their parents to prevent them from being married off.

The minister praised the girls and also the official for his help to them.
