Goldberg makes her West End debut in `Sister Act`

Whoopi is returning to `Sister Act` on the London stage of West End.

London: Eighteen years after she first starred in the hit movie `Sister Act`, Whoopi Goldberg is returning to the musical on the London stage of West End.
The 1992 musical about a club-singer disguising as a nun, had the actress playing singer Deloris Van Cartier but Goldberg is playing the Mother Superior in the stage version. Goldberg sent the play`s box office sales through the roof when she revealed she would be taking the role for three weeks, performing in 23 shows, reported a news website. The Oscar winner ended up with the role accidentally during a meeting with the fellow producers to find a replacement for outgoing Mother Superior Sheila Hancock. To give producers more time to find a new Mother Superior, Goldberg jokingly suggested she take on the role for a few weeks and they agreed. Before the curtain went up last night, Goldberg admitted she was nervous. "It`s a big deal. It`s The Palladium and it`s London, and it`s my first stage production here that I`m in," said the 54-year-old. She also dismissed expectations that she would played Deloris, insisting she was too old at 54 to play the role of the singer on the run from the mob. PTI
