Renovated portion of famous Gandhi museum inaugurated

Madurai: A renovated portion of the famous Gandhi museum here, the Vinobha Jothi Hall, open auditorium and Gandhi Asthi Peetam were inaugurated today.

N Mahalingam, president of Gandhi Memorial Museum said the new buildings for the Museum would be constructed if sufficent funds were released.

The Centre and state governments had each sanctioned Rs 2.5 crore, of which the union government had released Rs 1.25 crore. If the entire fund was released and if there were sufficient donors, then new buildings could be taken up for construction, he said.

He said the additional buildings were necessary to display various items. The Museum has sought an increase in maintenance fund from Rs five lakh to Rs 10 lakh.

He said the main building was in good shape, though some minor repairs like patching up cracks would be undertaken.

Rani Mangammal of Nayak period (16th to 17th century) had used the building to maintain her cavalry, which had then been maintained and renovated.

In the second phase of renovation, cracks in the main building will be plugged, he said.
