Peter Brook returns to `Mahabharata` for his new play `Battlefield`

London: Peter Brook seems to be revisiting his nine-hour epic stage production from 1985, 'The Mahabharata' as part of the Young Vic's new season.

The 90-year-old director's new play 'Battlefield' is said to focus on one section of the epic tale that deals with the aftermath of a military conflict, reported the BBC.

Talking about the play, Young Vic's artistic director David Lan said that Brook's staging of 'The Mahabharata' is acknowledged as one of the seminal theatre works of the 20th Century.

He added that in ' Battlefield,' Brook and his longtime collaborators Marie-Helene Estienne and Jean-Claude Carriere will explore the contemporary immediacy of just one of its many stories, which were the moment when the heroes of the epic face each other before a great battle.

Interestingly, the play about the epic Indian tale that narrates the story of sacrifice and revenge between the Kaurvas and Pandavas, will first premier in Paris in September before coming to the Young Vic in February.
