Mumbai: Despite two big World Cup matches over the weekend, R Madhavan-Kangana Ranaut starrer `Tanu Weds Manu` has opened reasonably well at the box office netting Rs 11 crore in three days.
According to the film`s producer Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, in spite of two big World Cup matches including the India-England clash, TWM has managed over 11 crores net in three days and the fact that the word of mouth of the film is so high, it is doing even better.
Made on a budget of Rs 16 crores including the print and publicity, the film has already recovered its cost by selling its satellite rights at a whopping Rs 9 crore.
Also the fact that `Tanu Weds Manu` is the only big film in March, because no big film is releasing within a month due to the cricket fever, makes its run even better and longer at the box office, sources said.
When contacted director Anand Rai told PTI that he had overcome the scare of releasing the film during the World Cup seeing the response to promotions and publicity before the release.
"I was just honest about my film, my actors and my crew. I delivered and felt good about it. Being a cricket lover, I realise that audiences just want a smile on their face and value for their money. Entertainment is the mode and it is whether you see India win a match or watching a good film," he added.
Meanwhile, according to boxofficeindia.com, the trade web portal followed by the film industry, TWM took a fair start at around 40 per cent on an all India basis considering the cast.
The North was better at 60 per cent in multiplexes. The film is being appreciated by the public especially in the North and should prove to be a success. The areas outside North will pick up well over the weekend. The music has turned out a huge advantage for the film and the clear run for the next few weeks is another plus.
`Saat Khoon Maaf` which released at the start of the World Cup, had a poor first week of around Rs 15 crore net. The film fell badly from Monday and the eighth day saw another huge fall of around 80-85 per cent.
`Patiala House` fell in the second week with around Rs 6.25 crore net business. The daily collections were steady but are just too low. The two week total is Rs 30.50 crore net, the website said.
