Mumbai: Bollywood child prodigy Darsheel Safary, who won everyone’s heart with his poignant performance in ‘Taare Zameen Par’, has bagged a plum role in Deepa Mehta’s next film.
Buzz has it that Darsheel Safary will play the young Saleem Sinai in Deepa Mehta’s film adaptation of Salman Rusdie’s ‘Midnight Children’, while American-Indian star Satya Bhabha will portray the grown up Sinai.
Talking to a daily, a source said, “Darsheel’s role as the young Saleem Sinai stretches though a lengthy period adolescence in the narrative. It’s quite a lot of footage. Deepa Mehta got Darsheel and Satya together for a session of familiarisation. They just hung around together. Satya got a hang of Darsheel’s personality.”
Speaking about Darsheel Safary’s acting abilities, the source added, “Darsheel proved a formidable co-star not for the younger cast but also for the heavyweights including Shabana Azmi and Seema Biswas. The unit threw a grand 15th birthday party for him on March 9 in Colombo where ‘Midnight’s Children’ was being shot.”
When contacted Darsheel’s parents, his father Mitesh said, “We’re really not allowed to talk about it. But Darsheel has missed out a lot on his school because he was shooting out of the country. Now that he is back I’m being very strict with his studies. He is not allowed to miss school, although he is promoting his new film ‘Zokkomon’. After school he has to go for tuition without fail.”
“He is in Class 9. He has to keep up with the rest of the class. If he falls behind because of his shootings, he may not be able to make good grades. What guarantee is there that his future as an actor is ensured just because he is successful in that field now?” reasoned the rational father.
Undoubtedly, Darsheel Safary is the next big thing in Bollywood.
