New Delhi: The country maybe hailing maverick Anurag Kashyap for delivering a cult revenge drama called ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, but he was not the first choice for the film.

The film, written by a Wasseypuriya Zeishan Quadri, was earlier offered to director Hansal Mehta. Hansal, at that point of time was on a sabbatical and didn’t want to make the film.

Quadri, who plays Definite in GOW part II, then went and approached Kashyap and rest, as they say is history. Anurag who also happens to be a good friend of Mehta asked for his permission before taking up the film. Although Hansal liked the script, he declined from directing the film.

Hansal’s new film ‘Jayate’ has been produced by Anurag and is going to be screened at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival.
