Mumbai: The trend of plagiarism is not new in Bollywood. When it comes to inspiration, Bollywood filmmakers have no qualms in copying from famous books. Latest addition to the list is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much hyped ‘Guzaarish’.
News has it that ‘Guzaarish’ is a rip-off of an unpublished novel ‘Summer Snow’, written by veteran writer Dayanand Raajan. The writer has discovered some strange similarities between his novel and the script of ‘Guzaarish’, except the fact that the lead protagonist of the movie, played by Hrithik Roshan, is a magician, while the protagonist of the novel is a dancer.
Apparently, Dayanand Raajan has slammed UTV and Bhansali, the producers of ‘Guzaarish’, with a legal notice demanding the explanation of the similarities between the movie and his novel.
Talking to a daily, Dayanand Raajan confirmed the news saying, "‘Guzaarish’ has many similarities with my novel. It`s shocking that the main plot, the love story, the hero being wheel chair bound due to accident and even the mercy killing are the same as in Sanjay`s movie. I had shown my novel to some people in the industry but I have no idea who leaked it to the writer of the film."
However, Dayanand defends himself by saying that the legal action taken by him is merely an attempt to save his novel. "I have the deepest regards for Sanjay but it (the novel) is an effort of a life time that has gone waste. Neither will this novel never be printed nor can it be made into a film ever," said an annoyed Dayanand.
When contacted, an insider said, "How does he know so much about our movie? We haven`t shown it to anyone yet. We will take a course of action whatever is necessary."
One may suspect if it is a genuine case of plagiarism or just a publicity gimmick before the release of much awaited ‘Guzaarish’.
