Playing blind man in `Chhodo Kal...` was challenging: Anupam
Mumbai: It was his idea to turn his philosophical character blind in `Chhodo Kal Ki Baatein` and Anupam Kher says he did so to challenge himself as an actor.
The 57-year-old actor, who stars alongside Sachin Khedekar in the film about a man who is stagnated in his life and is shown the way to live by a visually impaired man, says he suggested the change in his role a minute before filming began.
"I suggested to the director that my role be turned into that of a blind man just one minute before we started shooting. I wanted to challenge myself as an actor. I felt that the man has a lot to say but I did not want it to look preachy. It`s a blind man talking about vision," Anupam told PTI.
The actor said that the change in his character made the film more exciting to him and also made the film`s message more profound.
"We are not showing him as a fakir, he is a modern man, so beyond a certain point it would have been very boring with this man continously talking about life and how it should be.
"The thought of him being blind turned the film upside down but it made the film`s message deeper. I thought something which doesn`t excite me will not excite the audience. Playing him as a blind man was very exciting for me," said Anupam.
This is the second time in his career that Anupam is playing a blind man onscreen, the first being in a comedy film with Kader Khan.
"Earlier I did a comedy called "Hum Hai Kamal Ke" with Kader saab, but that was a fun film. I had my eyes open there, in this film I am wearing glasses. It was tough because I did not get any chance to practice, even though I was brave enough to tell my director to make me a blind man. I had a very competent actor with me and the team was patient," he said.
Anupam also added that having Khedekar as his co-star helped a lot as all his scenes are with the 'Astitva' actor.
"This film can work for Khedekar alone, but for me all my interactions are with him. It couldn`t have worked without him being the way he is as an actor. We complimented each other and also our being a friend helped in creating chemistry between us two actors."
"Chhodo Kal Ki Baatein," directed by Pramod Joshi, is set to release on April 12.
Anupam is busy with a number of other projects like the remake of "Chashme Buddoor", "Kya Super Cool Hain Hum" and "Special Chabbis" directed by Neeraj Pandey.
He is eagerly waiting for the release of his Hollywood film "Silver Lining Playbook" with Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper.
"The film is slated for a November 21 release. It was a fabulous experience shooting for it. The director is Oscar nominated David Russell. It is something I am proud of."
Anupam is also a part of the ensemble star cast of Deepa Mehta`s big screen adaptation of Salman Rushdie`s Booker-prize winning book `Midnight`s Children`.
"The film is almost ready, we have had a few trials, I think some post-production work is going on and by August it should be ready for release," he said.
