Rani to play a pivotal role in Bengali film ‘Africa’
Mumbai: ‘National Award’ winning director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury is working on his forthcoming Bengali film ‘Africa’ and the buzz has it that Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji is set to play an important role in the film.
Rani Mukerji has earlier done a cameo role in a Bengali film ‘Biyer Phool’ (1992), directed by her father Ram Mukerji. But if she agrees to do ‘Africa’, this will be her first ever full fledged role in Bengali cinema.
According to the reports ‘Africa’ is a female-centric film. The director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury has met Rani in Mumbai some time ago to discuss with her the story and her role in the movie.
Talking to a news daily a source said, "The director met the actress in Mumbai and gave her a story narration. An excited Rani asked him to come to her with the completed script. Interestingly, while he is keen on Mukerji, he had also met Rituparna Sengupta, who is under the impression that she`s in the film."
When contacted, director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury confirmed, "Yes, I did meet Rani. We`ve had discussions but nothing has been finalised. I am still working on the script. It`s too premature to talk about it. She is one of my favourite actresses! I would like to work with her."
He further added, "I plan on starting my Bengali film first and then the Hindi one next year. I am working on three scripts, two by noted Bengali novelist Sunil Gangopadhyaya. Sunil`s works include ‘Dui Nari Haate Torowari’ and ‘Ajaana Desh’ while ‘Africa’ is my story. I will be visiting Mumbai in the next few days to finalise preparations for my Hindi film."
Chowdhury`s debut movie ‘Anuranan’ won him accolades from all over the world and a ‘National Award’ for ‘Best Bengali Film’. He has also bagged four ‘National Awards’ for his second movie ‘Antaheen’.
