Mumbai: After having played a naive Rani in Vikas Bahl’s ‘Queen’, Kangana Ranaut’s portrayal of Alka Singh, aka ‘Revolver Rani’ comes as a huge visual jerk!
Nonetheless, as it was apparent from the trailer, ‘Revolver Rani’ is one of those films which deserves a special mention, primarily because it is shouldered by the heroine - who is the real hero of the film.
Expectations were certainly high, especially after the thumping success of ‘Queen’. But ‘Revolver Rani’ may still succeed in winning hearts despite being an unconventional Hindi film by nature.
Kangana as Alka is a rustic belle with a penchant for guns and who is madly in love with a wannabe actor Rohan Mehra (Vir Das). Set in the backdrop of Chambal, the film written and directed by Sai Kabir attempts to wear a dark comedy look.
Kangana essays the role with élan. Perhaps none could have sported a conical metallic bra onscreen and carry it with least inhibitions of looking vulgar. Kudos to Kangana for being incredibly bold! But Vir Das failed to make his presence felt as much as people would have expected.
With shades of politics, dark humour running parallel with an unusual love story, ‘Revolver Rani’ comes across as a rare-genre in Indian Cinema. Nonetheless, it has its own share of shortcomings.
The first half of the film could have been crisp. It would have been much better had the film picked up velocity from the word ‘go’. The title track sung by veteran Usha Uthup compliments Kangana’s screen presence and lifts the mood of the film. Actors like Piyush Mishra, Zakir Hussain and Pankaj Saraswat also play major roles in the movie which add to the film’s list of pluses.
With an unusual concept and Kangana as its hero, ‘Revolver Rani’ may do well at the Box Office. But the question is - will people embrace this new genre with open arms?
