Mumbai: Looks like tables have turned. All these years the Hindi film industry has looked southwards to acquire rights for remakes of southern hits. But with the recent success of Karan Johar’s ‘Agneepath’, the southern industry is queuing up to acquire rights of this Bollywood blockbuster.
Directed by debutant director Karan Malhotra, the film is a remake of an 80s classic which starred Amitabh Bachchan. The recent one starring Hrithik Roshan has already raked Rs 75 crore and is expected to earn more in the coming weeks.
According to a tabloid, the film has done good business in south India and has got all the southern filmmakers excited at the prospect of a remake. Sources claim that many have asked KJo for permission to make the film.
Speaking to the tabloid, a source said, “The Dharma Productions’ office has been buzzing with activity, ever since Agneepath hit theatres. In fact, Karan has met with some of them, who flew down to Mumbai last weekend. However, he is yet to decide who he will ultimately relinquish the rights to,” said the source.
A close associate of KJo confirmed the news and said, “Yes, Karan has had many filmmakers from the south approach him to discuss acquiring permission to remake Agneepath.”
Considering that the film is a tribute to the original classic and very close to Karan’s heart, will he be willing to give the rights of the film to someone else? “Why not? Karan has absolutely no problem as long as his family’s project is handled by capable filmmakers,” the friend replied.
Now the big question is, in which language will the film be remade? Watch this space for more.
