Girish Karnad faces flak on Twitter for his remarks on Rabindranath Tagore
Mumbai: At a talk organised by the Azim Premji Foundation at Bangalore on Thursday, noted playwright Girish Karnad was reported to have said that Rabindranath Tagore’s plays were “unbearable”. Along with that, Karnad also accused writer VS Naipaul of being tone-deaf and having borrowed a western matrix in his writings. The playwright’s comments were recipients of mixed response from the Twitterati. Here’s what some had to say about the incident:
Madhur Bhandarkar: I m surprise by #Girish Karnad`s statement on #Tagore. Such a talented person, wonder y he has made such a strange remark. (sic)
Suhel Seth: Methinks Girish Karnad just hates Nobel Laureates in Literature!!! Wait till he gets the Padma Bhushan!!!
Shobhaa De: Munnabhai`s sage advice to Girish Karnad: Get well soon!
@chinkysen: Girish Karnad comments on Rabindranath Tagore`s work. Well, India is a democracy. Everyone has a right to be ignorant, and ignored.
@NigelBritto: First VS Naipaul, now Rabindranath Tagore. Girish Karnad seems to be targeting bearded guys. His next target might be Dumbledore.
?@KanchanGupta: Rabindranath Tagore is `mediocre` according to Girish Karnad. Malice in this fellow knows no bounds. Unless he`s gone cuckoo.
