Poetess Maya Angelou dead

New Delhi: Dr Maya Angelou, acclaimed poet and author died on Wednesday morning at the age of 86. Maya Angelou is best known for her seven autobiographies including `I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings`.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom awardee has worked as an actor, writer, director, and producer of plays, movies and television programs. She had to struggle a lot during her youth, and was a well known activist who participated in the Civil Rights Movement alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcom X.

She is the pioneer of African American women writers and poets. She recited her poem `On the Pulse of Morning` at President Bill Clinton`s inauguration in 1993.

Angelou had not been keeping well for some time and had to cancel the last few of her lectures due to her health issues.
