Mumbai: Om Puri and Jagjit Singh were scheduled to visit Patiala for a show in memory of their mentor Harpal Tiwana. The maestro was supposed to perform Ghazals at the event but his illness has left Puri with no option but to pay homage to Harpal all alone.
Harpal, a well-known theatre personality was indeed the man behind making the veteran actor a well-known personality in the field of entertainment.
Talking about the role his mentor played, Puri said to a tabloid, “Look at fate. Jagjit is critically ill. We were supposed to be in Patiala to honour Harpalji, who is responsible for my acting career having taken off. It is he who pulled me out of my wage earner`s job and coaxed me to join his theatre group. He said, `How much money do you make per month? Rs 125? I will give you Rs 150 if you join my group`. That is how I found my vocation. I owe my life and career to him.”
The Ghazal maestro is still in the ICU after he was admitted to the Lilavati hospital in Mumbai on September 23 following brain haemorrhage. He underwent two life saving surgeries and has been recuperating since then. Fans and well-wishers have been endlessly wishing him speedy recovery. Puri, who happens to be one of his closest friends, too feels inconsolable following Singh’s life threatening illness.
About his trip to Patiala, Puri said, "It doesn`t feel the same. The trip to Patiala is something we had both planned down to the last detail. But I`m hoping for a miracle. I`ve been speaking to the doctors at Lilavati. I am told there has been a miraculous improvement in his condition.”
