Los Angeles: Teen idol Justin Bieber has revealed he can`t understand why girls scream for him -- and that he still gets grounded by mom despite his star status.
Bieber, 16, whose latest album "My World 2.0" shot to No.1 on the Billboard charts, told Oprah Winfrey in a TV interview broadcast on Tuesday that he is still trying to get used to the screaming hordes of young fans who greet his every appearance.
"It`s pretty hard to comprehend. Like everything`s just kind of surreal," Bieber said, in an interview on "The Oprah Winfrey Show".
Asked why he thinks teen girls are screaming and crying when they see him, he said: "I have no clue!"
Bieber comes from a small Canadian town and was signed to a record deal at age 14 after his mother posted videos of him singing on the website YouTube.
On a recent tour of Australia and New Zealand, the teen idol drew thousands of fans and the kind of hysteria reminiscent of The Beatles in the 1960s.
Bieber told Winfrey he tries to take a day off each week to hang out with friends or play basketball, and be a "regular kid."
Being the same as other kids also means occasionally getting grounded by his mom, Pattie.
"My mom takes things that I really like, like my computer, my phone," he told Winfrey. "She takes my phone away for a couple of days and I`m like, `Oh, I need that!`"
"You can`t say, `Mom, I can`t get grounded `I`m Justin Bieber`?" Winfrey asked him.
"She`ll slap me in the face!", he replied.
