Bollywood bereaved at Sai Baba`s passing
Mumbai: Big B has mourned the death of spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba who blessed him with "vibhuti" after his "Coolie" accident, Shilpa Shetty`s mother is devastated, and Sonu Sood says Baba will continue to be an integral part of his life.
Sathya Sai Baba died Sunday at age of 85 at a hospital in his home town of Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh after a prolonged illness. Here is what Bollywood celebrities had to say on his passing:
Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan posted messages on both Twitter and his blog remembering the time when he visited Baba after recovering from his "Coolie" accident.
"Very sad to hear of the passing of Sathya Sai baba...sent me `vibhuti` at the time of `Coolie` accident... on getting well visited him," Amitabh Bachchan posted on Twiter.
"Satya Sai Baba passed away. A saint, a generous soul, a builder of society. I had opportunity to be with him on an occasion. He had graciously sent me some of his famed `vibhuti` to be put on my tongue during the time I was struggling for my life after the Coolie accident. When I recovered, I went across to his ashram near Chennai. He met me in a side small chamber and blessed me by procuring more `vibhuti` virtually from the air.
"During his years working for the society through great amounts of work concentrating on building institutions and infrastructures to help the poor and the deprived, he built up a massive following and believers that were completely in awe of the man and his work for the masses. Our prayers for the departed soul!" Big B posted on his blog.
Aishwarya Rai: Shri Satya Sai Baba...deep sadness on his demise...He remains with us...Prayers...Aum Sai Ra.
Hema Malini: I met him once. It was an encounter etched in my mind and heart forever. It was my ardent wish to dance in his presence. He loved the fine arts including dancing. I`ve heard so much about his good work. He was a great soul.He has done so much for the needy! The faith that people had in him was unbelievable. I am sure he will come back in some avatar.
Mahesh Bhatt accompanied his friend Kabir Bedi once to a Sai Baba meeting.
He said: This was during the turbulent 1970s after my experiements with LSD. That`s when I set my eyes on Satya Sai Baba. He made me realize that the need to believe in an external force is hard-wired in mankind.
Shilpa Shetty: My mother is a huge bhakt of Sai Baba. She is in New York right now. She is devastated by the news. Unfortunately I never met him.
Sonu Sood: My mother was strong follower of Sai Baba`s teachings. So he was and will continue to be an integral part of my life. I am a Sai follower. I remember my mom got a picture of Sai Baba when I was five-years-old. That was when I got to know about Sai Baba. I didn`t meet him. But I`ve followed him always. It`s sad that we`re losing all the emblems of faith one by one.
Ananth Mahadevan: Sai Baba passed away on the day of Jesus Christ`s resurrection(Easter). Is this a coincidence or a signal? I had a friend in school who was a big devotee. The ash-falling-from-picture incident occurred in my friend`s house. I visited his place and waited for it to happen for me. Once Sai Baba came to Mumbai. I had gone to a huge ground in Chembur where the devotees had thronged. I saw him there for the first time. That`s as close as I got to him. His philanthropic activities are commendable. But his godly status is questionable. His death comes as a reminder about the mortality of the so-called gods.
Raveena Tandon: I didn`t follow him. But I learnt a lot from him. He funded many schools, hospitals and charitable causes. He enriched lives with his spiritual guidance. It was a life well lived."
