London: Academy award winning actor Denzel Washington has been handed an honorary degree by officials at the University of Pennsylvania.
The 56-year-old actor, who has won two Academy awards, donned the traditional graduation robe to pick up the Honorary Doctor of Arts degree at a commencement ceremony in Philadelphia on Monday, reported Contactmusic.
"I had to come exactly because I might make a fool of myself. I`ve found that nothing in life is worthwhile unless you take risks. Nothing," said Washington.
The `Training Day` star, who was a pre-medical student at Fordham University in New York before trying out journalism and drama, also spoke of his past mistakes.
"Do you have the guts to fail? If you don`t fail, you`re not even trying," Washington added.
The actor will be next seen in action thriller `Safe House`, to be released in February and an untitled project based on the adaptation of `The Matarese Circle`.
